US Approves Largest Offshore Wind Farm off Virginia Coast

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project was approved by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. It will be the largest US offshore wind farm at 2.6 gigawatts.

The wind farm will have 176 turbines, 3 offshore substations, and onshore transmission infrastructure. It will power 660,000 households.

Construction starts in 2023 and will be completed in 2026. The project will support 1,100 jobs.

A small 2-turbine pilot project has been operating on the site since 2020. This was the first US offshore wind in federal waters.

The first 8 of 176 monopiles arrived recently. They were made in Germany and will be installed starting next year.
