Samsung's New Galaxy Phones to Display Photos in Enhanced Ultra HDR Format
- Samsung's Galaxy S24 phones will display photos in Ultra HDR format for wider color and brightness range
- Ultra HDR is baked into Android 14 and maintains jpeg compatibility with "gain maps"
- Apple uses similar HEIF system but it's not backward compatible like Ultra HDR
- Previous Galaxy phones should also get Ultra HDR if updated to Android 14
- Ultra HDR improves display of HDR content, separate from capturing photos in HDR mode
