House rejects expelling Rep. Santos despite lies, citing concerns over precedent
-
Rep. Jamie Raskin voted against expelling Rep. George Santos, saying it would set a "terrible precedent" without a criminal conviction or House ethics judgment.
-
The expulsion resolution failed with 179 yes votes and 213 no votes, including 31 Democrats voting no. It needed a two-thirds majority.
-
Santos faces 23 felony charges but has not yet been convicted. He's also faced calls to resign for lying about his background.
-
Raskin said the House has only expelled 5 people historically, all for treason or criminal convictions. He would vote to expel if Santos is convicted.
-
Several other Democrats joined Republicans in voting no, citing due process concerns. The resolution was filed by a NY Republican seeking Santos' ouster.
